Listening Deeply

A power overlooked

Is to listen with all of me

This is harder than it appears

Closing my eyes may help me

At times many thoughts crowd

A jumble of noise within me

It flows into awareness

Hearing what’s outside now within me

Listening recognizes and honors

Accepting all as part of me

Allowing all to be as it is

Not afraid that it touches me

Fall leaves of changing colors gliding

Winter flakes in white crystals covering

Spring emerging through flowers growing

Eternal sun radiating warm energy flowing

Listen…listen deeply…Love resounding

A lost sense awakening within me

Gratitude for Achievements!

200 Followers AchievedEven the smallest of achievements are worth being recognized and celebrated. When we practice gratitude for small achievements, which I believe play an essential role in “large” achievements, we’re extending the power of that accomplishment. Picture the ripple effect…that drop of water into a smooth, still body of liquid. Ripple after ripple is created and it extends further and further out. All it takes is just that one little drop.

I just got one of those nifty notifications from WordPress that my travel blog, Amalia Travel, has now gained 200 followers…so I wanna celebrate by giving you thanks! Continue reading

Our Ideas and Differences

In the book “Love Without Conditions“, there is a chapter towards the end that is called The Death of the Ego. Here are a few lines that inspire and resonate with me…

People identify with thoughts that they think. If you want to communicate with people, find a way to acknowledge and include their ideas. Then, when you express your own ideas, it will be easier for others to acknowledge them. People will never be able to be together peacefully until their ideas can dwell together without competition. To accept another person’s idea, even when you don’t with it, is to extend to him respect and trust.

Dwelling together in peace requires that you see what links you to others, not what separates you. If you what links you, you will respect your differences. If you see what separates you, you will try to overcome those differences. The attempt to overcome differences invariably fails. That is because differences are healthy. As long as they are respected, they do not interfere with the potential for intimacy and cordial relations between people.

Always give another the space to be different. Then you will not be avoiding intimacy with him. If you feel that you need to become like him to be accepted by him or that he needs to become like you to be accepted by you, you are trying “to overcome” the differences. Just let the differences be. You are acceptable as you are, and so is he. Peace remains in your heart and in his. Everything is fine.

“Love Without Conditions” by Paul Ferrini, pages 146 – 147

What are some ideas that you have, that you do not share because of fear that others will not accept them? Have you shared them, only to experience people not accepting them and thus felt like they were not accepting you?

Speaking from my own personal experience, I also see how many times, I am not accepting my own ideas within myself. This seems to create a cycle where I live in fear of sharing my ideas, pursuing them, and accepting and including the ideas of others. How do I expect others to accept me and my ideas, when I do not even accept them myself?

When I think about this, it also helps me to see differences in a loving light. What would you say is the usual response to differences? I would say that in our world the response to differences is usually fear. It is okay that fear is there…it means that the opportunity of courage is also there. At times when I am afraid, I practice kindness to myself, rather than beating myself up for being afraid. Then a magical transformation seems to take place and I walk through the fear and see it morph into courage. In this space of courage, differences are shown for what they are…creativeness, magic, uniqueness and self-expressiveness. And we can be together with all of our differences and ideas, without fear and instead with love.

Wise Words from Carmen

Carmen is the one sitting up in the window sill :)

Carmen is the one sitting up in the window sill 🙂

Dear Carmen…she is the small, little lady who has been with my mother’s family long before I was alive. She is from the Dominican Republic and lives there now. I am staying with her while visiting my family. Her stature is short and she is older and grey now, but her personality exudes a big energy and when she speaks, there’s no chance of not hearing her…that little voice of her’s is loud, just as her generous heart is so big. Her faith is Catholic and she is one of the most accepting, loving people I know in my life. On the same hand, she’s the one I learned all the Spanish curse words I know! When she makes a point to speak something to me, I make sure to listen. That is the confidence and energy with which she speaks, sometimes relating what she shares to something God spoke to her, a message she heard from her church, or more often than not, from one of the many heart-touching experiences her life has been filled with.

Today, she came to me in the kitchen and told me this… Continue reading

The Parts of my Personal Legend

Growing up and even as recently as the past few years, I have received the advice from people to focus on one thing at a time regarding talents and career. To do one thing very well, is better than trying to do several things not so well. This is even advice that I sometimes give to my clients in my social media coaching work. I recommend to them that they keep their plan simple when they are first starting and until they are managing it consistently, before expanding and growing into more social media platforms. Yet…and yes, there is a very big “but” here…what I am getting at in this little essay is that there more and more of us who are developing and enjoying multiple careers because we want to use and grow more than one of our talents and passions.  Continue reading

Freedom, Everywhere and Always

Today in the USA is our Independence Day. This 4th of July I’m reflecting on how I know this world…the family and people I know all over the world. There are those that I have met and those that I have yet to meet. The concepts and principles of today, that energy of freedom and independence, has always existed for all of time. It comes from inside of us, from that innate human nature. Despite what we may experience and see with our eyes, it exists everywhere.

At times and in some places in this world, there are fights that ensue for this. Yes, there are lives lost…and there are new lives that begin…new ones that are born. Could it be that those who sacrifice their life for freedom and independence, their freedom and our freedom, are those that learn to overcome death? What if their life and fight was not a sacrifice in some aspects of the word and more than anything, it was living…living with such courageous love that they embrace freedom from where it comes…magically before and extending beyond this life.

As a traveler, there are lessons I have learned about freedom and my independence. It is a power within me, a part of me, that teaches me I am not a victim, ever. From this perspective, I have discovered a new appreciation for the spirit of freedom and independence. One of the powerfully beautiful things about it, is that it will mean something different for each and every person.

Wherever you are in the world, know that if you want, you are free. Independence is not something given to you and therefore cannot be taken away. The truest sense of freedom is being you. What meaning and power do you give to freedom?

Experiencing the Flow of Life

This poem was inspired by a spontaneous enjoyment of a Colorado creek. To read more about that experience, visit the post on my travel blog: Going With the Flow of Life.

A spontaneous adventure

Of jumping in a creek

Taught me more than I expected

Its journey for my heart was sweet

Invigorated by the mountain water

Cold chill, a cleansing wash

A soft breeze carrying warm sunshine

The bright rays touching with warmth

As I laid in this flowing water

Laying back to simply float

Allowing it to carry me

Feeling the current move me along

At first I was struggling

Creating my own mistrust

This led to more bumps and bruises

Than when I surrendered,

Completely laid back to float

When I relaxed and enjoyed my breathing

I felt aware, fully present in experiencing

Immersing myself in the river’s flow

Looking up and enjoying the sky’s beauty

The masterpiece overhead of sky, trees, and sun

Feeling the water embracing me

Carrying me so sweetly and strong,

A most beautiful dance of sensations

Of trust and surrender, being taken care of

Of peacefully flowing along

Oh my God! How much this is like life

Where I struggle with the current

With myself and nature I fight

I end up sputtering on that lovely water

Hitting rocks that don’t have to hurt

And what a beautiful lesson

As all life truly is

That I can flow in this life river

It cares for me, bringing me along

For whatever may come my way,

For all that I do not know

For the “what if’s”, the “how to’s”

I can instead embrace the unknown

So I choose to allow and accept,

And this means in love I can let go

To surrender to the power

Of me and the river of life’s flow
